Following a change of dates, MUCSA will be hosting an information session for students interested in Graduate or Internship positions in 2011 at Microsoft in Redmond. Dates have been changed and applications for a new group of students are being taken until April 15th now so if you missed out earlier, this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved.

Thursday April 1st 1-2PM
ICT Theatre 2

  • Specific details about recruitment process
    • Internship and Graduate positions
    • Steps, questions you might be asked
    • What you need to do to get involved
  • See videos and photos taken on the campus
  • Not just Computer Science.
  • Free pizza and drinks afterwards!

From Microsoft:
Our interns make a real difference. Not by filing paperwork or running errands, but by developing real products. Here, you’ll get started right away, running your own projects and putting your own skills to work. This is why our internship program is one of the most successful and sought after in the industry. Because you’ll learn more in 12 weeks here than you would in a whole school year. It’s the kind of work that gets noticed by millions of people all over the world. Kind of redefines the whole concept of internships, don’t you think?

Security with SSL: How It Works And How to Use It Properly

Matt Giuca

An increasing number of web transactions are made over SSL, such as
secure banking and email, yet this technology is not widely understood
and requires a lot of care on the user's part to guard against
exploits. This talk covers theoretical and practical aspects of public
key cryptography including the simple maths behind it, signing and
encryption, and use of SSL on the web. It also includes a discussion
of some SSL exploits, and a practical demo of how to set up a CSSE
server login without a password.

If you're interested in taking this offer up, as always we're located on level 1 of the ICT Building (turn 120 degrees counter-clockwise just at the top of the second flight of stairs and you should be directly facing us). The best times to stop by are listed on the software page.

Windows 7 Activation Issues

It's come to our attention that a small subset of users are having trouble activating (not during installation where the key will be accepted) their Windows 7 keys through Microsoft. If you receive the error shown below during activation first, don't panic! The issue has been identified and fixed on our end and for all new sales following October 26th.

Image

If you've purchased a key on the 1st September, 09 or between October 9th, 2009 - October 26th, 2009 then you may be affected.
  • If you've successfully activated your copy of Windows then no action needs to be taken - you're okay.
  • If you've installed and received the error during activation we can fix this - please see instructions for emailing us below
  • If you received a Windows 7 key during the above dates and haven't installed yet then you may receive that error when you activate. Unfortunately there's no way to tell until you've actually tried to activate so if you encounter an error then please see instructions for emailing us below.

Windows 7 Key Missing Last Character

If your CD Key is missing the last character then you should have already received an email from us. If you didn't receive it or are still having issues, please email us (see below).

  • Your Student ID
  • You UniMelb username (that you use to login with - not your password)
